Melody looked up, her gaze sharpening. "Isn't there a green energy summit coming up soon?"
Howard arched an eyebrow. "You want to throw your hat in the ring for The 'Volt & Velocity' Green Energy Summit?"
"I do."
"What brought this on?"
"It's not an impulsive decision."
Melody grabbed a glass of water from the coffee table and took a measured sip. "My Ivy League degrees are in green energy. Ever since I moved back, all I've done is waste time at charity galas, fashion shows, and networking dinners with useless socialites. People have completely forgotten what I bring to the table."
Howard slowly set his teacup down. "Are you doing this to impress Lucian?"
Melody paused, refusing to answer.
"Or are you trying to prove your worth to Landon?" Howard pressed.
"I'm doing it for myself."
Howard narrowed his eyes. "Say that again."
Melody lifted her chin defiantly. "I am doing it for myself."
She met her father's stare dead-on. "I am sick of being reduced to the pathetic Monroe girl who spent her life chasing after Lucian Langford. And I refuse to let Landon think my only value is the capital you control."
Howard's expression finally softened with approval. "I'll have my executive assistant forward you the project briefs."
"Thank you, Dad."
"Don't just thank me."
"I'll bring you the trophy."
Howard nodded. "Good. Once you commit, you follow through. But brace yourself. The Monroe name will get your foot in the door, but it also paints a massive target on your back. Everyone will be waiting for you to fail."
Melody picked up her phone. "I'm ready for the heat."
Catching her distracted gaze, Howard offered one final warning. "As for Landon, play your cards carefully."
"You don't think he can win, do you?"
"My opinion of his success is irrelevant."
"Then what matters?"
"Whether or not you're smart enough to see him for what he really is."
Melody didn't say a word.
Howard picked his contracts back up. "Get some sleep."
She stood and headed for the staircase. Just as she reached the bottom step, her screen lit up with a notification.
It was an official confirmation email from the summit committee.
Her father hadn't wasted a single second pulling strings to get her on the roster.
Without a trace of hesitation, she typed out a formal acceptance and hit send.
