Melody stared down at Landon Langford's name flashing on her screen, and all the frustration she had just swallowed in the VIP suite flared right back to life.
She threw a dark glare at the heavy wooden door behind her.
Seraphina's soft voice drifted through the wood, followed by Lucian's deep, rumbling response. The sheer intimacy of their muffled exchange proved there was absolutely no room for her.
She swiped to answer, her tone clipping. "What?"
"Did you see him?"
"I did."
Melody squeezed the silk handles of her rejected gift bags. "He's awake. The doctors are optimistic."
Landon chuckled darkly. "He's got nine lives, I'll give him that."
"Landon."
"What, is your heart bleeding for him?"
Melody began marching toward the elevator, keeping her voice low. "Don't talk about him like that. He was severely injured."
"Am I wrong?"
"Did you honestly call me just to gloat?"
"Why else would I call?"
Melody stopped in front of the elevator doors, watching the digital numbers slowly descend. "You're angry."
Landon offered dead silence.
"You always laugh right before you lose your temper," she pointed out.
A venomous laugh echoed through the speaker. "Does Lucian know how intensely you study my every move, Ms. Monroe?"
Melody's face flushed with irritation. "Don't drag him into this."
"You literally just walked out of his hospital room, and you're telling me not to mention him?"
"It was basic etiquette to check on him."
Melody's tone dropped, betraying a humiliating defeat.
"You're walking out with the exact same gifts you walked in with, aren't you?" Landon suddenly prodded.
Melody glanced down at her useless, expensive peace offerings. "He didn't take them."
"Let me guess. Seraphina played the overprotective wife?"
Melody's mouth pulled into a bitter line. "She said he's on a restricted diet."
"And what did the mighty CEO say to that?"
