My Unborn Baby Chose My Husband for Me novel Chapter 448

Evie slumped against the wall, her tone dripping with venom. "I wouldn't bother if I were you."

Melody paused abruptly. "Why not?"

Evie glared down the hall at the closed suite door, her grip on the phone turning white-knuckled. "Because it won't make a difference. The only person Lucian cares about right now is Seraphina Simmons."

Melody didn't reply right away.

Evie lowered her voice to a harsh whisper. "Melody, didn't you say that Lucian absolutely hates women who try to use their feelings to manipulate him?"

"I did."

"Then what the hell is this?"

Tears of frustration blurred Evie's vision. "He nearly died for her out there. The absolute first thing he said when he woke up was her name. I literally slammed the door in his face and stormed out, and he didn't even flinch!"

Melody's voice took on a placating tone. "Evie, calm down. Lucian is severely injured. He couldn't chase after you even if he wanted to."

"How am I supposed to be calm?"

Evie spun around, turning her back to the nurses' station. "If this keeps up, I won't have a shred of standing left in this family!"

"Watch your mouth."

Melody warned her sharply. "You're in a public hospital."

Evie bit her lip. "I know."

"Lucian just woke up. If you pick a fight with Seraphina now, it will only push him to defend her harder."

"Then what am I supposed to do?"

"Do absolutely nothing."

The heavy thud of a car door shutting echoed through the phone. "I'll find a way to get in there."

Evie opened her mouth to argue, but movement at the far end of the corridor caught her eye.

Christian Chase was power-walking out of the elevator, holding up a transparent evidence bag.

Inside the bag was a crumpled, gray envelope.

All the color instantly drained from Evie's face, and the phone nearly slipped from her sweaty palm.

"Evie? Why are you so quiet?" Melody demanded through the speaker.

Evie's legs turned to jelly. She practically dragged herself out of the hospital, terrified of being spotted.

She hailed the first cab she saw and fled the scene.

Christian cast a suspicious glance over his shoulder. "Was that Evie? Why did she look like she just saw a ghost?"

Christian knocked and entered the suite, handing the evidence straight to Lucian. "The envelope is wiped clean of fingerprints. Conveniently, the security cameras near the mailbox were disabled, so we have no footage of who dropped it off."

"That's awfully convenient," Seraphina muttered, her gaze snapping to Lucian.
