Gripping her phone tightly, Evie forced out an excuse. "It's nothing, Grandma Eleanor. I was just checking the group chat. Everyone in the family is asking about Lucian."
Eleanor scrutinized her. "You look incredibly pale, Evie."
"I'm just shaken up."
Evie shoved her phone into her purse and hurried over to hook her arm through the matriarch's. "How could I not be terrified after what happened to him? Stop analyzing me and let's go check on him."
Eleanor remained silent, her penetrating gaze lingering on Evie's face.
Evie's throat tightened under the scrutiny, prompting her to add, "I'll go grab you a coffee. You rushed all the way here, and your hands are freezing."
"That's not necessary."
"Yes, it is."
Evie gently nudged her toward the ward. "You go on in. I'll be right back. I need to ask the nurses if he's allowed to drink water anyway."
Eleanor finally relented with a nod. "Don't wander off."
"I won't."
The moment Evie turned her back, the facade of the obedient granddaughter completely evaporated.
She ducked around the corner and yanked her phone back out.
Suddenly, footsteps approached from behind.
Her wrist jerked, instantly locking the screen as she spun around, nearly colliding with a nurse pushing a medical cart.
The nurse shot her a look. "Excuse me, Miss."
"Oh."
Evie stepped aside, hugging the wall.
Down the hall, the door to the VIP suite was cracked open.
Seraphina was seated by the bed with Little Bean nestled securely against her chest. The tiny infant was full and content, his tiny fists gripping her collar, refusing to let go.
Lucian was lying motionless on the bed. His complexion was slightly better than it had been in the mountains, but his lips were still drained of color.
Seraphina cradled the baby with one arm while her other hand clung tightly to Lucian's, as if terrified he would vanish the second she let go.
Eleanor walked in, her eyes misting over at the poignant sight.
"Seraphina, let Susan take the baby for a while. You need to rest."
Seraphina shook her head. "It's fine. I want to hold him."
Little Bean let out a soft whine.
"Mommy's lying. Her arms are so sore, but she's pushing through it."
