Zeke's finger tightened on the trigger. "Do you have any idea who he is to me?"
"I don't know, and I don't care."
Lucian stared down the barrel of the gun with a predatory gaze. "Anyone who touches my wife gets the exact same treatment."
"Fine." Zeke jerked the muzzle higher. "Then you can go straight to hell with him."
Lucian shoved Seraphina hard behind him, sending her stumbling back several steps.
"Run."
"No!" Seraphina caught her balance and lunged right back, grabbing Lucian's arm in a desperate grip. "If we die, we die together! Why did you push me away?!"
"Seraphina, listen to me."
"You shut up."
She turned fiercely to Zeke. "You pull that trigger, and he dies. But I won't survive this either."
"And if I die, who's going to save your boss when his wound gets a secondary infection? Are you going to treat Victor Vane yourself?"
Zeke's aim wavered slightly at the threat.
In that split second of hesitation, the heavy thud of rapid footsteps and the barking of dogs echoed from just beyond the property.
Zeke's expression morphed into pure panic, and he spun around, sprinting for the house.
A gunshot tore through the air.
The bullet struck Zeke's shooting arm with dead accuracy. The rifle flew from his grasp as he crashed heavily into the dirt.
Seraphina's ears rang from the deafening crack, but Lucian instantly pulled her against his chest, his large hands clamping firmly over her ears to protect her.
"Don't be afraid. Our people are here."
A swarm of uniformed officers flooded down the hillside.
Mina Maddock burst out of the house, letting out a bloodcurdling scream at the sight of the raided yard, before a pair of officers tackled her to the ground.
"Mr. Langford! Mrs. Langford!"
Christian Chase practically stumbled as he sprinted up to them, his eyes bloodshot from exhaustion.
"We were too late, I'm so sorry. This place was hidden too deep, we searched all night..."
"You made it. That's all that matters."
