Time slipped away, and before she knew it, another five hours had passed.
Seraphina Simmons was jolted awake by a sudden chill.
The suit jacket that had been draped over her shoulders had slipped to her waist, and a strange sense of unease washed over her.
She snapped her eyes open and reached out beside her, only to find the space empty.
"Lucian?"
There was no answer.
The sky outside the window was a hazy gray, signaling the break of dawn.
She scanned the room, but The Wood Shed was completely deserted.
Seraphina's heart tightened as she leaned against the wall to stand, stumbling her way toward the door.
The door was slightly ajar. She pushed it open, and as the cold wind rushed in, a shadow darted past the right side of the entrance, prompting her to instinctively dodge out of the way.
A dark bundle of fabric hit the ground right at her feet.
Startled, Seraphina looked down.
It was a jacket—an olive-green camouflage coat.
It belonged to Lucky.
She traced the trajectory of the thrown jacket and spotted a figure crumpled in the corner of the yard, a pool of crimson spreading beneath him.
She gasped sharply.
Seraphina took a half-step back, her mind buzzing with shock.
Lucky was lying face down, his back and arms covered in deep gashes that oozed blood.
He was still breathing, his chest rising and falling in shallow, weak rhythms.
Seraphina's gaze darted frantically across the yard. The main house's door was shut tight, and the entire area was unnervingly quiet.
Where did Lucian go?
Could something have happened to him?!
Panic seized her. She spun around to retreat, only to crash into a hard, solid chest.
"Ah!"
She bounced back half a step, and as she turned her head, she finally saw the person standing behind her.
Lucian Langford was leaning heavily against the wall, propped up by a thick wooden stick. His face and clothes were smeared with blood, making it impossible to tell if it was his own or someone else's.
"Lucian."
