When the needle pierced his skin, he didn't make a sound. Only his Adam's apple bobbed slightly.
Seraphina pushed the medication in, withdrew the needle, and immediately checked the makeshift splint on his leg to ensure the wood hadn't shifted.
She untied the blood-soaked fabric and examined the wound underneath.
"It's infected, but it's not critical yet."
She mashed the remaining herbs she had gathered and pressed them gently against the torn flesh, binding it tightly once more. "The antibiotics are in your system. The fever should break soon."
Lucian leaned heavily against the wooden wall, reaching out to pull her down beside him.
Seraphina didn't resist. She melted against his side, the two of them huddled shoulder-to-shoulder in the damp, freezing corner of the shed.
Lucian wrapped his arm securely around her shoulders.
"Are you tired?" he asked, his voice a low rumble in the dark.
"No." Seraphina shook her head against him. "You sleep first."
"We both sleep."
"We can't."
"That creep Lucky is still sneaking around outside. Someone has to keep watch."
Lucian went quiet for a long moment before murmuring, "Then you sleep. I'll take the watch."
Seraphina turned to look at his fever-flushed face. "Lucian, look at the state of you. Who exactly is protecting who here?"
"Exactly. So you protect me."
He pulled a faint, teasing smirk. "But you have to lean against me. Standing guard all night is exhausting."
Seraphina couldn't help but lightly punch him in the chest.
"Stop joking around."
Lucian caught her fist, holding it warmly in his hand. "You worked incredibly hard today. How did I not know my wife was a certified surgeon?"
Seraphina lowered her voice to a whisper. "It wasn't hard, just terrifying."
"I only minored in veterinary medicine back in college. I never thought I'd actually have to use it on a human."
Lucian froze for half a second.
"Veterinary medicine?"
"Yeah."
Two seconds of utter silence passed before Lucian burst into low, rumbling laughter, his broad shoulders shaking against hers.
The movement pulled at his injuries, and he let out a sharp hiss of pain.
Seraphina quickly pressed her hands against his chest to steady him. "Stop laughing, you're going to hurt yourself!"
"I can't help it."
Lucian turned his head to look at her, his dark eyes sparkling with genuine amusement. "My wife really is a jack of all trades."
