Seraphina accidentally caught sight of his gruesome wound again, and a fresh wave of tears hit her. She forced herself to swallow her sobs, biting them back down her throat.
Shivering violently, she ripped the long tassels from her ruined skirt. Gathering a few sturdy branches, she tightly bound them to his broken leg, fashioning a makeshift splint.
Who would have thought this ridiculous designer dress would actually end up saving them?
Lucian reached out, his icy fingers gently wiping the tears tracking down her dirt-streaked face. "Don't panic. I'm fine. We need to find shelter from the wind."
Even with a shattered leg and deep lacerations, his first instinct was to calm her and strategize.
Panic clawed at her chest, but she pressed her lips into a hard line and gave a firm nod.
"Okay."
Swallowing her terror and the biting cold, she wove a crude drag-litter out of thick vines and dead branches. With agonizing effort, she hauled Lucian across the rocky ground until they reached a shallow alcove shielded from the howling wind.
She sprinted back toward the icy waters. Digging through the scattered wreckage on the shore, she found an intact emergency toolbox from the trunk.
Lucian watched her frantic silhouette, his chest tightening with an overwhelming mix of pain and devotion.
He remembered the words he had swallowed right before the car plummeted off the cliff.
He had wanted to tell her that just having the time they'd shared was enough for one lifetime.
But sitting here, having survived the impossible, he realized it wasn't enough. It would never be enough.
He wanted the rest of his life with her. He wanted the next life, too.
Seraphina ripped open the toolbox and tore through it, her heart sinking. No lighter.
She whipped her head toward him. "Do you have your lighter?"
Lucian gave a weak, breathless laugh. "No."
"That's impossible, you always carry one."
Not believing him, she leaned over and began patting down his soaking wet pockets.
Suddenly, his hand clamped firmly around her wrist. His voice dropped to a low, husky rasp. "Watch the hands, sweetheart."
