Seraphina froze, desperately scanning the dark water.

Finally, under the pale moonlight, she spotted Lucian. He was clinging to a piece of debris, his face terrifyingly ashen.

"Lucian!"

She fought through the freezing water, throwing every ounce of her remaining strength into reaching him. The icy plunge had stiffened her limbs, making every stroke pure agony, but she refused to stop.

By the time she finally reached his side, her energy was almost completely drained.

"Lucian..."

She grabbed his hand. It was like ice—colder even than her own.

She immediately hooked his arm over her shoulders to pull his weight.

Lucian used his remaining strength to shove her away. "Sera, go. Leave me here."

She stared at him, stunned, as hot tears flooded her eyes. "Excuse me? You're telling me to leave you?"

"Fine. Then I won't save you," she choked out, her gaze locking fiercely onto his. "But I'm not saving myself either. I'm staying right here to sink with you."

Lucian's eyes widened in horror, a bitter sorrow twisting his features. "Why are you doing this? One of us living is better than both of us..."

"Take that back right now! We are both making it out of here!"

She shoved her hand out toward him again. "I am asking you one last time. Are you coming with me or not?"

His lips trembled, but no sound came out.

Just as she was about to completely lose her temper, he finally whispered, "Yes."

Seraphina let out a breathless laugh. "That's more like it."

She pulled his heavy arm back over her shoulder. Only when his full body weight slumped against her did she realize just how heavy he was.

But she didn't stop moving. Using a piece of the shattered car door for buoyancy, she dragged him inch by agonizing inch toward the shoreline.

Several times, her exhaustion threatened to drag them both under, but she bit down on her lip, clinging to the scrap metal to keep them afloat.

Lucian watched her fierce, stubborn profile. He wanted to beg her to let him go to save herself.
