Mission: Revenge – The Heiress's Second Life novel Chapter 28

He pulled his hand out of his pocket and tossed a sleek, brand-new smartphone straight into Clara's arms with forced indifference.

"Take it!"

He spun on his heel, ready to bolt.

Clara lunged forward, grabbing him by the collar of his shirt. "Don't think buying me off with a phone gets you out of homework tonight."

Ethan was furious.

He thrashed wildly, but her grip was like a steel vise.

He quickly realized this sister of his was freakishly strong—definitely stronger than Mr. Harrison.

He glared at her venomously. "It's eleven-thirty! I'm going to sleep. Let go of me!"

Clara didn't care what time it was.

What needs to be done today, gets done today.

No matter how late it was, you don't push things to tomorrow.

She dragged Ethan into his bedroom, yanked a worksheet from her backpack, and dumped his textbooks onto his desk.

"Memorizing a poem or spelling drills. Pick one."

Ethan wanted to bash his head against the wall.

He shouldn't have felt bad that she didn't have a phone. He shouldn't have played the nice guy and brought it to her in the middle of the night.

Couldn't he have just handed it to her in the morning?

Wait! Why did he have to give her a phone at all? He must have lost his mind!

He glared at the desk. "Poem."

He flipped open his literature book and began reciting a classic poem out loud, practically yelling to annoy her.

If he couldn't beat her up, he was going to give her a migraine.

"Shall I compare thee to a summer's day? Thou art more lovely and more... more..."

He froze on the second line.

Clara chuckled. "Temperate. Thou art more lovely and more temperate. It means mild or balanced..."

She checked the time. It was already 12:30 AM.

She spoke calmly. "I'm going to supervise your homework every single night. The day you don't finish your tasks is the day you don't sleep."

With that, she turned and walked out of his room.

Ethan ground his teeth, but strangely, he realized the seething hatred he usually felt for her was gone.

Yes, she manhandled him. Yes, she was fiercely strict. But when she forced him to sit down and read that poem, his mind had felt incredibly... quiet.

When he was little, teachers used to discipline him. Then they gave up. Then his own family gave up.

Without anyone watching him, he gamed whenever he wanted and roamed the streets whenever he pleased. He thought it was freedom, but it was just numbingly boring.

Now, suddenly, his days had a focal point.

His biological sister wasn't the wicked monster their stepmother had painted her to be.

She cared about Zander, and in her own brutal way, she cared about him.
