Throughout their six years of marriage, Vera had enjoyed a remarkably smooth life.
She was naturally accommodating and always knew exactly when to play the supportive wife, ensuring she and Jonathan never had a single screaming match.
This was the first time Jonathan had ever looked at her with such raw, unfiltered disgust.
She felt genuinely wronged, but her survival instincts told her this wasn't the time to throw a tantrum.
"Jonathan, please, just listen to me..."
Vera murmured softly, walking over to wrap her arms around his.
He aggressively shoved her away. "What did you promise me when we got married? You swore you would love and care for all five of those kids. I trusted you implicitly. I handed over total control of this household to you, and this is how you repay that trust?"
Vera froze, and then the tears started pouring.
"How can you say something so heartless, Jonathan!" she sobbed, playing the victim perfectly. "I'm just one woman. Do you have any idea how exhausting it is to raise six children? Serena is in her crucial senior year, and so is Clara. I was terrified Clara's future would be ruined in the country, so I brought her home, even at the expense of ignoring my own daughter! Can't you see how much I care about her?"
"As for Zander, he's always been perfectly fine at the academy. I call the staff regularly, and they've always told me he's making great progress and doesn't need constant hovering. I thought it was safe to step back a little. How was I supposed to know he'd just wander off tonight?"
Jonathan was still vibrating with rage.
He wasn't just furious with Vera; he was drowning in self-loathing.
If he had just carved out a fraction of his time to check on his own children, Zander wouldn't have been neglected for six straight months.
If Pearl hadn't died in that car crash, these kids would be a thousand times happier right now.
The moment Vera saw that specific look in his eyes, she knew exactly what he was thinking. He was mourning Pearl Preston again!
That bitch was dead and buried. Why couldn't he just let her go?!
Regardless, Clara was going to systematically rip away everything Vera held dear.
Knock, knock!
The sudden sound startled her. Clara pulled the door open to find Ethan leaning against the frame, one hand stuffed coolly into his pocket.
With the chaos of finding Zander, she had completely forgotten to drill this brat on his homework.
She didn't expect the little punk to willingly deliver himself to the slaughter.
She smirked. "Did you finish your homework?"
Ethan flushed with irritation.
He wasn't a masochist. Why would he voluntarily do extra homework?!
