Chapter 187-He Threatened Our Sleeping Son
He held a glass of scotch. He stopped a few feet away from us. A slick smile stretched across his face.
“Minerva, Pembroke said. He did not use my title. The disrespect was deliberate, a show for the watching executives. “A surprise to see you here. I assumed
you would be locked in your office, counting your missing shipping containers.”
Tristan shifted his weight. A raw, predatory tension rolled off his frame. I squeezed Tristan’s arm, a silent command to hold steady.
‘Oliver,” I said. My voice carried over the quiet crowd. I kept my tone flat and bored. “I see the severance package 1 approved went to good use. A new suit. A
new watch. You clean up well for a proxy.”
The smile slipped from his face. A flash of genuine anger sparked in his eyes.
“I am the CEO of Vanguard Logistics,” Pembroke corrected. He puffed his chest out. “I command the largest fleet in the eastern sector. My ships move while
yours sit dark in the water.”
“You command nothing,” I stated. I took a step closer to him. The scent of expensive cologne and cheap fear rolled off his skin. “You are a signature on a piece of paper. Someone handed you two billion dollars and told you where to stand. Enjoy the bespoke suit, Oliver. When the people holding your leash decide you are no longer useful, they will take the watch back.”
“You always were an arrogant bitch, Pembroke hissed. The polished facade cracked. The bitter, resentful man beneath bled through.
Tristan took a half-step forward. The movement was slight, but the threat was absolute.
Pembroke flinched. He took a quick step back, nearly spilling his drink. He looked at Tristan, his eyes wide, recognizing the violence radiating from my
husband.
But Pembroke recovered. He remembered the dark money backing him. He remembered the invisible army he represented.
“You think you hold all the cards because you sit in the Chairman’s seat,” Pembroke said. He lowered his voice. The words were meant only for us. “But you only control what happens in the boardroom, Minerva. The world is much bigger outside your glass tower. The eastern trade routes are unpredictable. Rough
waters. Strong winds.”
He took a sip of his scotch. He held my gaze.
“You never know what might wash up on a windowsill, he whispered.

The air left my lungs.
A blinding, roaring heat flooded my veins. The urge to pick up a glass and shatter it across his smug face consumed me. I wanted to tear his throat out. I
wanted to reduce him to ash on the ballroom floor.
I felt Tristan move.
Tristan did not care about the cameras. He did not care about the investors watching our every move. He heard the threat against Elias, and the last thread of his civilized restraint snapped. He reached for Pembroke.
I grabbed Tristan’s wrist.

My fingers dug into his musele. I pulled him back with all my strength.
“No,” I ordered. My voice trembled with the force of my own rage, but I held the line. ‘Not here.”
Tristan froze. He stared at Pembroke. The look in Tristan’s gray eyes was not a threat.
Pembroke swallowed hard. The color drained from his face. He realized he pushed too far.
“Enjoy the summit, Oliver,” I said. My voice turned to ice. “It is the last one you will ever attend.”
I did not wait for his response. I turned my back on him. I kept my grip on Tristan’s wrist and pulled him through the crowd. We walked out of the ballroom. We left the flashing cameras and the whispering executives behind.
We reached the armored SUV waiting at the curb. Marcus opened the door. We climbed inside. The heavy door slammed shut, sealing us in the quiet dark.
Tristan ripped his arm from my grip. He hit the reinforced partition behind the driver’s seat. The thick glass shuddered under the impact.
“He threatened Elias to your face!” Tristan roared. The sound tore through the confined space. “He told us they can touch him! And you made me walk
away!’
“If you hit him in that ballroom, you go to jail,” I fired back. “The police arrest you. The media destroys the company. And the syndicate wins. That is exactly
what they want. They want us reckless.”
‘I do not care about the company!” Tristan yelled. He turned on me. His chest heaved. The agony and the terror twisted his features. “I care about the boy sleeping in the penthouse! They are laughing at us, Mina. They are operating in the dark, and you are trying to fight them with press releases and stock
audits.’
I stared at him.
He was right.
I built Aegis with legal contracts. I took the Johnston empire by exposing the Whitmore crimes to the board. I fought my wars in the light.
But Oliver Pembroke did not care about the law. The people backing him did not care about SEC regulations. They bypassed my security. They stood outside
my child’s window.
You cannot destroy a shadow by shining a light on a puppet, Tristan said. His voice dropped to a rough, fractured whisper. “You have to burn the ground he
stands on.”

He looked away from me. He stared out the tinted window at the passing city.
