Her eyelashes fluttered as she looked down, her tone softening. "Unfortunately, she disappeared. No trace, no body. We've been looking for over twenty years, but we've never found her."
Nora's heart skipped a beat. "Missing for over twenty years... then she..."
Phoebe offered a light chuckle. "But I firmly believe she's still alive. My grandfather used to tell me how incredible her research was—it was even classified under a top-secret national protection program. I suspect she's been placed in witness protection, like some of those elite academics. Her files are probably classified, and we won't hear anything until the gag order expires."
Listening nearby, Hudson slightly furrowed his brow.
Felix Vaughn...
The missing scientist Finnian Fairchild had asked him to track down.
Finnian had mentioned that Felix belonged to the Vaughn family and was the aunt to both Vincent and Phoebe.
The information matched up perfectly.
Yet, why did it seem like Phoebe had no idea about Felix's connection to the Fairchilds?
She clearly didn't know that Finnian and Evangeline were Felix's biological children...
What was really going on here?
Could Henry Fairchild have deceived her into marriage?
That seemed highly unlikely.
Hudson's frown deepened. This situation was far more complex than he had initially assumed.
Finnian had specifically requested he keep this investigation a secret from the Vaughns. It seemed only the Fairchild family held the key to this mystery.
Pinching the bridge of his nose, Hudson decided to drop it. Whatever it was, it had nothing to do with him.
He had zero interest in meddling in another family's drama right now.
...
The private jet touched down in Northampton just after two in the afternoon.
The winter air in the city was bone-chillingly dry, the wind whipping against their faces like tiny blades.
Hudson had a meeting scheduled for the afternoon. After checking into the hotel with Nora and grabbing a quick bite to eat, he changed into a sharp suit and headed out.
Phoebe had wanted to tag along, but lacking the necessary clearance for the meeting, she was stuck at the hotel, staring blankly at the walls with Nora.
"Let's go shopping," Phoebe suggested. "I'm going to lose my mind if we stay cooped up in this room any longer."
"Sounds great!" Nora eagerly nodded. She hadn't been back to Northampton in quite some time and was itching to explore.
The city's premier luxury plaza, Northampton Heights Plaza, was located right along the central axis, just a short drive from their hotel.
Nora had assumed they were just going for a casual stroll. But the moment Phoebe's car pulled up to the entrance, a team of men in sharp black suits hurried over. "Ms. Vaughn, the third and fourth floors have been completely cleared for your convenience," one reported in a low voice.
Phoebe gave a curt nod and marched straight through the revolving doors without breaking stride.
Nora trailed behind her, marveling at the formidable line of bodyguards flanking their path. The sheer extravagance rivaled anything Vincent would pull.
