Liana didn't dare push her luck. She stood frozen, tears streaming down her face in silent, pathetic drops, too terrified to speak another word.
Finnian turned back to Nora. "Mrs. Lancaster, my apologies. I'm sorry you had to witness that."
With a stiff nod, he grabbed Liana by the arm and dragged her away.
Stumbling behind him, Liana's mind raced with sheer panic.
Why on earth was he asking about Nora's parents...?
Did he suspect something?
Could Nora actually be Evangeline Fairchild?
A violent shudder ripped through Liana's body, and a cold sweat broke out across her back.
Impossible.
She immediately rejected the idea.
How could a wretched girl like Nora be the missing heiress? She was the daughter of a maid and a rapist. She had absolutely zero connection to the Fairchilds.
But...
The way Finnian had asked about her parents—it wasn't just casual curiosity. There was weight to it.
Liana's fingers trembled.
She couldn't afford to gamble on this.
If Nora really was the lost heiress... what would happen to her?
Would she even have a place in the Fairchild family anymore?
No!
She absolutely could not lose the life she had.
...
When Finnian finally shoved Liana back into her hotel room, she was weeping hysterically. Mascara ran down her cheeks, mixing with her tears and framing her brutally bruised face. She looked utterly pitiful.
"Finnian... I know I messed up. I swear I'll never do it again. Please, don't be mad at me," she sobbed, her voice taking on a soft, pleading tone.
"Enough. Stop crying."
Looking at her miserable state, Finnian's anger began to ebb. He didn't have much affection for his adopted sister, but he had watched her grow up. There was still a baseline level of familial obligation.
She was the only daughter in the Fairchild household, raised in the palm of their hands.
Even as an adopted child, she possessed inheritance rights equal to the blood heirs. As long as she didn't commit an unforgivable sin, her future was entirely secure.
Liana lifted her tear-stained face. Her voice was thick and raspy. "Finnian... I really am sorry. I... I just wasn't thinking straight. I promise I'll behave."
She reached out, hesitantly grabbing the cuff of his sleeve.
