Finnian quickly snapped out of his daze. Seeing the teasing glint in Jude's eyes, he knew exactly what his friend was thinking.
He wasn't like Jude, constantly pining after another man's wife...
"It's nothing..."
Given the setting, it wasn't the time for a deep conversation. Finnian smoothly changed the subject. "When is Professor Campbell arriving in San Francisco? The Fairchild family has to secure a spot in the Vanguard TBM Chip project this time, right?"
Jude chuckled softly, a look of helplessness crossing his face. "Don't ask me. You know how the Professor operates. His schedule is a complete mystery. He's always on a plane; half the time, I don't even think he knows where he's flying tomorrow..."
Finnian pressed his lips together, his brow furrowing.
Currently, his father, Henry Fairchild, controlled the family. Even though Finnian was the eldest son and direct heir, the Fairchilds were never short on ambitious sons.
As long as Henry sat on the throne, Finnian would remain nothing more than the "heir apparent."
He would never truly hold the reins.
In recent years, the race for microchip technology had reached a boiling point. The Fairchild family was late to the game, severely lacking in core technical capabilities. To make matters worse, they had backed the wrong horse during the last power struggle by siding with the Vaughn family, resulting in a devastating loss.
While the Vaughns provided some assistance in research, it wasn't nearly enough to elevate the Fairchilds into the top tier of the industry.
Unless they managed to seize a massive opportunity.
In his eyes, the Vanguard TBM Chip project was the golden ticket.
The problem was...
Professor Douglas Campbell was spearheading the initiative.
And the Professor absolutely despised Henry Fairchild.
Even if the Fairchild family possessed the necessary expertise—which they didn't—it was highly unlikely the Professor would allow them onto the team.
But Finnian had to try. He couldn't just throw in the towel.
Given the chip's strategic importance, the Professor would undoubtedly seek out Hudson for the project.
So, all Finnian had to do was stick close to Hudson. Even if he had to beg, borrow, or steal, he was going to force his way onto that research team.
While Finnian was deep in his strategic brooding, Nora was battling her own internal crisis.
River had only given her three days...
She needed to act depressed and heartbroken for the next couple of days, stage a massive fight with Hudson, and demand a divorce. Then she and Hudson could play out their ruse...
Hopefully, it would be enough to fool River and secure the Ivory Pill.
As she was lost in thought, she suddenly realized her plate had been piled high with food by Hudson. The mouth-watering aroma wafted up to her nose.
"..."
She picked up her fork, speared a piece of seared venison rib, and took a bite. The rich, savory juices exploded on her tongue. It was perfectly crisp on the outside and unbelievably tender on the inside, the seasoning absolutely flawless.
"Wow!" Her eyes widened.
