It was then that Arthur noticed the words 'Testing Center' stamped across the envelope.
He suddenly remembered that Olive had gone to get a DNA Paternity Test done recently. She must have just shoved the results into the glove box.
That forgetful girl...
Arthur's lips curved into a faint smile. He opened the glove compartment to put the folder back, but the car behind him suddenly honked.
He glanced up and saw the light had turned green.
Without another thought, Arthur slammed the compartment shut and stepped on the gas.
...
Soon, the black Maybach rolled into the underground parking garage of the Lancaster Group headquarters.
Arthur took the private elevator straight to the top floor.
As the doors slid open, a line of waiting bodyguards bowed their heads. "Artie."
Arthur didn't break his stride, offering a slight nod in acknowledgment.
He strode directly to the CEO's office, knocked, and pushed the door open upon hearing a response.
Hudson Lancaster stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, his back to the door.
He held an unlit cigarette between his fingers, his thumb casually brushing over the filter, clearly just needing something to hold.
Hearing the door, he didn't turn around, simply tilting his head slightly. "What's the situation with Finnian Fairchild?"
"The sketch artist managed to recreate what Ms. Fairchild looked like at twelve or thirteen, based on the pawnshop owner's description. Finnian asked me to relay that he owes you a favor. If you ever need anything, just say the word."
Hudson let out a soft scoff. "Owes me a favor? The Fairchild Family has poured massive amounts of wealth and resources into searching for her for over two decades without a single clue. I find one trace, and suddenly he's indebted to me?"
"Finnian probably realizes that while the clue is small, it at least proves the Fairchild heiress is still alive and was once in San Francisco."
Hudson arched an eyebrow noncommittally and tossed the unlit cigarette into the trash. "Anything else?"
Arthur leaned forward slightly, lowering his voice. "Sebastian picked up a rumor. He heard the Whitman Family originally had two of the Ivory Pills. They kept one and gave the other away... but he couldn't find out who they gave it to."
Hudson glanced at him. "You said it yourself—it's a rumor. It's hard to tell what's true and what isn't. Someone could have intentionally leaked false information..."
Arthur froze for a second, then frowned. "How should we proceed?"
"Since there's chatter, true or false, it doesn't hurt to investigate. Start with Cade Whitman and the family's old butler. Test the waters with them. If it turns out to be real, follow the trail all the way down."
"Understood, Mr. Lancaster."
Hudson pulled a mint from his pocket and popped it into his mouth. "And what about Arthur Lancaster II? Has he made any moves recently?"
