Vincent Vaughn smiled at Nora Reed, his long, narrow eyes full of teasing amusement. "What's so funny, Mrs. Lancaster? Care to share with the rest of the class?"
Nora couldn't possibly say she was laughing at him. As she racked her brain for an excuse, Hudson Lancaster's cool voice chimed in from beside her. "She's laughing at you for being a dumbass."
Was he always this blunt? Though he wasn't wrong.
Nora bit her lip and glanced at Hudson. Wasn't that a bit too offensive?
Hudson caught her subtle expression. The corners of his lips curled up slightly, and his hand reached under the table to give her fingers a gentle squeeze.
Vincent frowned. "Did I ask you?"
Hudson ignored him completely. He took his time placing a piece of food on Nora's plate. "Honey, see that? You shouldn't waste your kindness saving people like him. Next time you run into him, just let him drown. It'll save us from listening to his nonsense."
Vincent let out a scoff of pure disbelief.
"Fine. You're really something!"
He practically gritted his teeth. He owed Nora his life, but he didn't owe Hudson a damn thing. If he knew he could win in a fight, he would have smashed his glass and ordered his men to beat Hudson to a pulp!
Nora knew her laugh had been entirely inappropriate.
She lowered her head, pretending to take a sudden, intense interest in her plate of sautéed vegetables.
She poked at the greens with her fork, lifting small bites to her mouth and chewing as slowly and meticulously as possible, praying everyone would just ignore her.
But things didn't go her way.
Several gazes, both obvious and discreet, fell upon her.
Jude Winslow's gaze was the most restrained. He glanced at her only once before looking away.
They hadn't seen each other in over half a month. Her radiant complexion seemed even more stunning, blossoming like a gorgeous rose at its peak, so breathtaking that it was hard to look away.
It was just a shame that such a beautiful rose was guarded by a vicious dragon who would swallow anyone who dared to get close.
He lowered his eyes, picked up his teacup, and took a sip, swallowing down the emotions he had no right to feel.
Beside him, Finnian Fairchild was much more open with his staring.
He watched how fiercely protective Hudson was and couldn't help but smile. He thought the young woman was absolutely adorable. She had a sweet, innocent charm that made people want to spoil her. He understood why Hudson held her so tight. If he had a little sister like her, he would probably keep her tucked in his pocket every day, refusing to let her suffer even the slightest grievance...
But as soon as the thought crossed his mind, he froze, then let out a self-deprecating chuckle. What on earth was he thinking?
"Mr. Fairchild, you didn't come all the way to San Francisco just to crash our dinner, did you?"
Professor Douglas Campbell suddenly spoke up, casting a cold glance at Henry Fairchild. "Are you just here because Lancaster Group is about to finalize their microchips, and you're afraid you bet on the wrong horse?"
Henry's expression remained neutral. "Professor Campbell must be joking. I'm just here to watch the show."
Professor Campbell scoffed. "Watch the show? More like panicking that you stood on the wrong side."
