"He's the only son? How many sisters does he have?"
"Eighteen."
"..."
That many?
Nora was internally speechless.
No wonder Vincent always moved with a small army of bodyguards. Being constantly hunted by eighteen ruthless sisters sounded like a living nightmare.
Gunfights, car chases, plunging into rivers...
It was a miracle Vincent had survived this long.
"Ironically, the Fairchild family is his exact opposite..."
Hudson sneered as the thought crossed his mind. "The Fairchilds of Northampton breed nothing but sons. Finnian's generation is exclusively male, save for one missing girl—Evangeline. Even Liana, despite being a mere adopted daughter, was granted equal inheritance rights by the Matriarch just because they were desperate for a female presence..."
Hearing this, the pieces started to click into place for Nora.
The Vaughn Family was starving for male heirs. Vincent was the sole target of eighteen power-hungry sisters who wanted him dead so they could claim the throne.
No matter how capable Vincent was, he couldn't fight off eighteen knives in the dark forever. He needed an alliance with heavy political armor.
Liana was undoubtedly the perfect candidate.
But...
Nora was baffled. "Vincent actually wants to marry Liana? He's into her?"
Hudson chuckled darkly. "It has nothing to do with attraction. Strategic marriages are about power, leverage, and background. The person attached to the title is just a formality. If Vincent marries her, he anchors himself to the Fairchild empire. Whether she's competent, sane, or even lives very long... that's irrelevant."
Nora nodded slowly.
But the moment the door swung wide, Nora froze.
Liam stood in the hallway, looking completely exhausted from his flight. A half-step behind him stood an elderly man dressed in a faded sweatshirt, washed-out jeans, and worn black cloth shoes.
His white hair was twisted into a messy knot atop his head, held in place by a smooth wooden hairpin. At a glance, he looked like an eccentric hermit off the street.
"Where's Mr. Lancaster?" Liam asked, a sharp edge of urgency in his voice.
Nora quickly stepped aside. "He's inside. Please, come in."
Liam guided the old man into the suite, giving a quick introduction. "Ms. Reed, this is the specialist I mentioned—Dr. Silas Vane. He's traveled the globe treating medical anomalies."
Dr. Vane strolled in with overwhelming confidence, his eyes darting around the lavish entryway. "A night in this joint must cost a fortune, huh?"
Nora offered a polite smile. "Please have a seat, doctor."
Dr. Vane didn't need to be asked twice. He plopped himself onto the plush living room sofa, bouncing a little to test the cushions. He stroked the leather approvingly. "Good hide. This didn't come cheap either, did it?"
