Nora yelled for what felt like an eternity, her voice scraping raw, but her efforts yielded absolutely nothing.
She let out a defeated sigh. Just as she was debating whether to drag herself up the rocky bank, Vincent pulled his phone from his pocket. "What are you screaming blindly for? Shine a light before you start shrieking like a banshee!"
Nora glared at him. "Where am I supposed to get a light? My phone is waterlogged and completely dead."
Vincent ignored her, casually shaking out his device...
Good lord.
Water was visibly dripping from the speaker grilles.
Nora had been clinging to a sliver of hope, but seeing his phone leaking like a faucet, she knew they were screwed.
"Use mine." Vincent moved his thumb to press the power button.
"Is yours even going to turn on? You..."
Before she could finish, the screen flared to life.
"..."
What on earth?
Vincent looked up, catching her dumbfounded expression. A cocky smirk tugged at the corner of his mouth. "Never heard of waterproof tech, Mrs. Lancaster?"
He tapped on the flashlight and handed it over.
Nora grabbed it instantly, frantically waving the blinding beam toward the distant bridge. "Hudson! I'm over here! Hudson..."
...
Meanwhile, high up on the bridge.
A solitary beam of light suddenly pierced the ink-black stretch of the riverbank!
The flicker swayed in the biting wind, pathetically faint against the massive sweep of the search-and-rescue spotlights. But Hudson spotted it in a heartbeat.
She surged to her feet, taking two eager steps toward the blinding lights before a sharp, throbbing pain in her ankle forced her to a halt. She had twisted it somewhere in the chaos.
The black Maybach slammed on its brakes, skidding to a halt right at the edge of the gravel. The door flew open, and Hudson stepped out.
The moment Nora saw him, her vision blurred with hot tears.
There, amid the freezing autumn winds of Chicago, the man she loved was running toward her.
...
Hudson moved with terrifying speed, practically sprinting across the uneven stones before pulling her flush against his chest.
Nora felt his arms lock around her with bruising force, squeezing so tight she could barely draw a breath.
But she didn't pull away. She buried her face into his chest. His body heat radiated through their soaked clothes, and beneath her cheek, his heart hammered a heavy, frantic rhythm.
Hudson rested his chin against the top of her head and closed his eyes. He drew in a long, shuddering breath, anchoring himself to the reality that she was alive, safe, and right here in his arms.
