The Lancaster family was currently riddled with internal strife and external threats.
Lawrence Lancaster was circling like a vulture, Silas Lancaster hated him to the core, and countless rivals were waiting in the shadows for a piece of the Lancaster fortune.
The second news broke that Hudson had collapsed, the company's stock would plummet within a week. The fractured factions within the family would swarm in like sharks scenting blood in the water.
Hudson lowered his voice. "I dragged Nora into this mess. I have to secure her future and keep her safe. Even if I die, I won't let her suffer the slightest grievance."
He turned his head slightly, peering through the gap in the hedges to look at that slender silhouette.
Nora was laughing at something Olive said, her eyes curving beautifully. The sunlight bathed her profile, making the ends of her hair shimmer.
Hudson withdrew his gaze. "You said I have three months left?"
Liam looked pained. "Yes..."
"That's enough."
Six months.
That was enough.
He had never known happiness like this in his entire life.
He wanted to grow old with her.
Unfortunately...
Fate had other plans.
"Hudson..." Liam tried to reason with him again.
But Hudson held up a hand to stop him. "That's enough. Has my will been fully notarized?"
Liam let out a heavy sigh and nodded. "It's done."
The corner of Hudson's mouth tipped upward into a faint, fleeting smile. "Good."
Hudson looked down at her, his gaze impossibly soft. "When have I ever lied to you?"
She studied him for a couple of seconds before finally nodding. "Then make sure you help him out."
"I will." Hudson ruffled her hair, a gentle smile on his lips. Yet, his gaze drifted past her, settling on the clouds burning bright crimson in the evening sky.
Autumn in San Francisco was long. In two months, winter would arrive.
But even in the dead of winter, it never snowed here.
Two months...
"Nora..."
Hudson's voice was low and gravelly, sounding like an offhand thought. "Do you like the snow?"
"I love it." A dreamy look washed over Nora's face as memories flooded back. "When I was little, Sienna and I always looked forward to winter. Every time it snowed, we'd build snowmen and have huge snowball fights. It was the best..."
