"Officer, my daughter..."
"Jade wants to see you."
Marcus nodded profusely. "Yes, yes, I'll go in."
The door opened again.
Marcus walked in and saw Jade cuffed to the chair, red marks on her wrists, her eyes swollen from crying.
His eyes instantly reddened.
"Jade..."
"Dad, save me. I don't want to go to prison..."
Marcus rushed over and grabbed her hand. "Don't be afraid. Dad is here. I've already hired a lawyer. We will get you out."
Jade nodded frantically. "Dad, you have to save me. I really didn't know the certificate was fake. Someone helped me get it... I really didn't know..."
Marcus's heart twisted.
He didn't know who she meant, but this wasn't the time to ask.
"Jade, listen to me. Cooperate with the police, tell them everything, and the lawyer will help you."
Jade's crying paused. "Dad, what do you mean? Cooperate? I don't want to stay here! I want to go home!"
Marcus looked agonized. How could he get her out?
She broke the law, the police had to investigate. What could he do?
Seeing his expression, the last string in Jade's mind snapped.
"You don't want to save me at all!" Her voice was shrill. "You're just like Nora! You all want to destroy me! You wish I were dead!"
Looking at her crazed demeanor, Marcus felt both pain and anger.
He wanted to scold her more, but seeing her swollen face and tear-streaked cheeks, he swallowed his words.
He took a deep breath and closed his eyes. "Jade, calm down. I'll figure something out."
"What can you figure out? You can't even handle Nora. You're useless! You're a coward! If you had any power, would I be bullied like this by Nora? You can't even protect your own daughter. What kind of father are you?"
Marcus's face cycled through shades of green and white.
He stared at his hysterical daughter and suddenly felt like she was a stranger.
Was this the Jade he had pampered since childhood?
How did she turn out like this?
