Ginger walked into the room supporting her lower back, with Silas trailing closely behind.
She wore a loose, dusty-blue maxi dress, her hair casually tied back in a low bun, projecting an image of soft, maternal radiance.
"Grandmother."
Beatrice's eyes lingered on her face for a moment before slowly trailing down to rest on her perfectly flat stomach.
"How far along?"
Ginger's hand instinctively rested on her abdomen. "Two months. The doctor said the pregnancy is stable and the baby is developing perfectly."
A rare, genuine smile finally broke across Beatrice's face. "Wonderful. This is the first great-grandchild of the Lancaster family. You need to focus entirely on resting. No more running around."
Ginger nodded eagerly. "Yes, Grandmother."
"The first trimester is crucial. I'll have Thomas hire a team of elite maternity nurses. You can take your pick."
"Thank you, Grandmother."
Perhaps the thrill of finally becoming a great-grandmother made Beatrice unusually talkative. She gave Ginger a long list of instructions and advice until she grew tired and ordered the maids to see them out.
As soon as Ginger and Silas were gone, the warm smile vanished completely from Beatrice's face.
"Thomas, have someone run a background check. Find out if the child in her belly actually belongs to Silas."
"Yes, Madam."
Once Thomas left, Beatrice was alone in the sprawling, quiet living room.
She leaned back against her pillows and closed her eyes, her mind swirling with complex thoughts.
The Lancaster bloodline was thinning dangerously.
If Ginger was genuinely carrying Lancaster blood, that child would be the family's sole heir.
She had no choice but to take this seriously.
But if it was a lie...
Her eyes snapped open. Ginger and Silas wouldn't dare try to con her with something this massive.
"Don't worry. She'll never get pregnant as long as she lives."
"What do you mean?"
Ginger leaned in close, lowering her voice as she recounted exactly how she had spiked Nora's drink.
"I paid a fortune for that drug on the black market. It's completely colorless and odorless. You can't taste it in water. Even a tiny drop guarantees permanent infertility. Even if she magically got pregnant, the baby would die in the womb."
Silas's eyes lit up with malicious glee.
"Are you serious?"
"Of course I am. Have you ever known me to fail?"
Silas stared at her for two full seconds before bursting into a dark laugh, pulling her tight against his chest. "Ginger, you are my absolute lucky star."
Leaning against him, Ginger smiled with overwhelming arrogance.
Outside the car windows, the city lights blurred past, casting alternating shadows of light and dark across her face.
