Nora's voice was soft, and Hudson didn't quite catch it. He frowned and leaned closer. "What did you say?"
Nora stopped talking, her eyes closed, drifting off to sleep.
Hudson smiled helplessly. He didn't press her. He gently patted her back, and just as he was about to carry her to bed, he felt a soft warmth press against his arm.
Looking down, the woman who was supposed to be asleep was clinging to his arm, swaying it gently. Her dark, expressive eyes blinked drowsily.
"Don't be mad anymore, okay?" she looked at him with pleading eyes.
Hudson was momentarily speechless, feeling as if a feather had lightly brushed against his heart, leaving a maddening itch.
He shifted slightly on the sofa, as if trying to shake off the sensation.
Realizing he was being flirted with by a drunk, he shook his head and chuckled softly, feeling somewhat powerless.
But Nora's words started flowing again. "...Hudson."
"Yeah."
"I feel so sick..."
Her voice was tiny and muffled, carrying a nasal tone that made her sound incredibly wronged. "Why are you so good to me?"
Hudson didn't answer, merely watching her.
She was curled up in a little ball on the sofa. Her cheeks were flushed with alcohol, the tip of her nose bright red, and tears pooled in her eyes, threatening to spill.
"Hudson... you are the only person... who has been nice to me in twenty years."
She lowered her eyelashes, her voice growing fainter. "I don't deserve your kindness. I'm a bad person... I lied to you."
Hudson's gaze turned somber.
"What did you lie about?"
Tears fell like pearls onto the sofa, rolling down Hudson's arm. The searing heat of her tears made his pupils constrict.
Nora forced her eyes open, her vision blurry.
After their past encounters, she had slowly realized that this man was incredibly dangerous; it was best not to clash with him head-on.
But now, she had no way out.
Silas was holding her secret over her head, ready to ruin her at any moment.
Her only gamble was that Hudson might still have a soft spot for her.
Rather than letting Silas use her secret to humiliate her, it was better to strike first and confess everything to Hudson.
At the very least, he might go easy on her for Jade's sake...
