Edmond planted his arm beside her head, trapping her against the wall.
“Let go,” Nora demanded, her voice dropping to an icy chill.
“No.”
Nora lifted her chin, meeting his stare head-on. “Edmond, we are broken up.”
“I never agreed to that.”
“A breakup doesn't require your permission.”
Edmond pressed his lips together, his voice low and pleading. “Nora, please stop acting out. Just come back home with me, okay?”
Staring at him, Nora found the whole situation utterly laughable.
To this very second, this man truly believed he had done nothing wrong.
In his twisted reality, she was just throwing a tantrum. He thought that if he just coddled her a little, she would obediently follow him home and go back to being the same old Nora whose world revolved around him.
“I'm not throwing a tantrum.”
She enunciated every single word. “I am telling you, in all seriousness, that we are done. Stop harassing me.”
A myriad of emotions flickered across Edmond's face as his grip on her wrist tightened involuntarily.
“Is this about Juliette?” he asked, his brow furrowing deeply.
“I've told you before, she's practically just a younger sibling to me. She's young and immature. I've already reprimanded her. She won't pull a stunt like that again.”
Just a younger sibling.
Hearing those words made Nora's stomach churn with absolute disgust.
She scoffed, yanked her hand free with a forceful tug, and turned back toward the elevators without giving him a second glance.
“Nora...”
Spotting people walking nearby and terrified they might blow her cover as Jade, Nora abruptly whirled around to face him. “Stop coming after me! I'm already married!”
Married?
Edmond stood rooted to the spot. The very word sounded preposterous.
Nora loved him far too much. There was no way she would ever marry someone else.
“Edmond...”
Ferris spoke with extreme caution. “Back at the club... do you think Nora had already regained her hearing? Did she hear us joking around?”
“So that's what happened,” Edmond murmured, his voice so soft it was more like he was talking to himself.
Ferris blinked in confusion. “Huh?”
Edmond spoke slowly, pieces clicking together in his mind. “She must still be furious with Juliette and me. That's why she threw the ring away and made up this insane lie about being married.”
“Look,” Ferris said, carefully weighing his words. “Why don't we head back first? We can figure out a solid plan later...”
“No.”
Edmond cut him off, running a weary hand down his face. “I'm staying right here until she gets off work. I'm going to clear the air.”
“Clear what air?”
“That Juliette is just a childhood friend. If Nora really can't stand her, then fine. After we get married, we can move out into our own place so she doesn't have to see Juliette anymore.”
