Hit a woman?
Would Evan really do that?
If he would, then Stella was right not to forgive him.
A man like that deserved to spend the rest of his life alone.
He would be a hundred times worse than a man who merely used women for his own benefit.
“Why wouldn’t he?” Amos asked. “You know what Evan’s temper is like. It’s terrible.”
Ivy fell silent.
A bad temper was no excuse to hit a woman.
“Has he ever done it before?” she asked worriedly.
The way Amos spoke made Evan sound like someone who genuinely might hurt a woman.
“I don’t know.”
There had never been any women around Evan during the years Amos had known him.
But according to the rumors from Harbor City, Evan and Stella’s marriage had certainly been troubled.
That was what Amos could not understand.
Their marriage had been miserable in Harbor City.
Yet now that Evan had brought Stella to Seaborne, he was desperate to win her back at any cost.
“Then why would you say something like that?”
He had no idea whether it was true, yet he had casually suggested it anyway.
Rumors were dangerous.
A baseless comment could become completely distorted after being repeated enough times.
Ivy rolled her eyes at Amos, clearly annoyed by his reckless gossip.
“Why are you looking at me like that now?” Amos demanded.
He was going to lose his mind.
He had only made an offhand comment, and now she was glaring at him.
“I’m saying you shouldn’t talk carelessly. You’ll cause trouble.”
Ivy knew exactly what Amos’s mouth was like.
If he were not so irritating, Aaron might have forgotten about the two of them years ago.
But Amos’s mouth was simply too aggravating.
Every time Aaron remembered him, he felt compelled to make his life difficult.
Anyone who did not know the truth might think Aaron still could not get over Ivy.
…
Downstairs in the dining room, Evan sat at the table with a grim expression.
Stella had walked away immediately after slapping him.
After an unknown amount of time, he called Amos.
