Listening to her mother viciously degrade her while endlessly praising Zander felt like an invisible hand squeezing the life out of her chest.
She stood in silence, watching her parents fawn over him, showering him with gross flattery as if he were their own flesh and blood.
Meanwhile, Zander maintained his flawlessly polite, aristocratic facade, navigating their pathetic brown-nosing without missing a beat.
It was entirely calculated.
He knew her family was her fatal weakness, so he was actively weaponizing them against her.
She tried to bite her tongue, but the sheer hypocrisy of the room finally pushed her over the edge. She marched right up to Zander, locking him in a dead stare.
"You. Hallway. Now."
Without waiting for a response, she spun around and walked straight out the door.
Zander blinked in surprise, then offered Gerald and Miriam a charmingly apologetic smile. "Excuse me for just a moment."
He set the paring knife down and followed his wife into the corridor.
The moment they reached the far end of the hallway, Eliza unleashed her fury.
"We had an agreement. We see each other at City Hall in thirty days."
"Until then, we stay entirely out of each other's lives. What are you trying to pull?"
Zander stopped just a few feet away from her.
His voice held a faint, almost imperceptible trace of grievance.
"Eliza, I simply came to check on your parents. There's no ulterior motive. Please don't be so defensive."
Eliza let out a harsh, biting laugh, stepping right into his personal space. "Zander, do you think I'm completely stupid? I know exactly what kind of monster you are!"
She tilted her head back, drilling her gaze straight into his soul.
"Didn't you use to look at my parents like they were trash on the bottom of your shoe? You thought they were cheap, embarrassing peasants. Every time we had to visit, you acted like you couldn't run away fast enough. Playing the role of the devoted, submissive son-in-law must be absolutely exhausting for you. Honestly... doesn't it make you want to throw up?"
All the color drained from Zander's face. A flash of raw panic and agonizing regret pierced his composure.
He reached out to grab her hand, but she swatted him away in utter revulsion.
