Left for Dead Came Back for Everything novel Chapter 184

Second floor. Divorce registry.

The clerks were already at their stations.

Eliza sat in the blue plastic chair in the waiting area, her knees neatly together, her canvas tote resting on her lap, the paper ticket pinched in her right hand.

Her heartbeat was much steadier than she had anticipated.

She didn't know why, but from the moment she opened her eyes this morning, she felt lighter than she had in years.

Her legs didn't ache.

Her chest didn't feel tight.

Even breathing felt effortless.

Ticket C007.

There were six couples ahead of her, but since it was early and a few had missed their numbers, the line was moving fast.

They were currently serving C004, a couple in their early thirties. The woman's hand was visibly shaking as she signed the paperwork at the counter.

Eliza glanced at them before returning her focus to her phone.

Gwen was definitely still asleep.

She had bragged about staying up all night bingeing the show, so she was probably wrapped in her duvet, dead to the world.

The corners of Eliza's mouth lifted into a smile.

The absolute first thing she would do once she walked out those doors was call her.

The second thing was heading straight to the studio.

Jane had given her a half-day, meaning she had to be at Studio A by one o'clock sharp.

The group choreography had been pushed to the afternoon, and Mr. Roth was covering her morning walk-throughs—she absolutely could not be late, nor could she give anyone an excuse to question her professionalism.

What should she get for lunch?

There was still a little bit of the lemon pound cake Julian had given her, plus whatever fruit and pastries they had on set. That should do.

She mentally checked off the mundane little tasks ahead of her, meticulously planning out her day.

She promised herself that once this miserable chapter was fully closed, her only priorities would be taking care of herself, eating properly, crushing her career, and getting enough sleep.

The thought of her future brought a soft, relieved sigh to her lips.

Just then, a familiar set of footsteps echoed from the stairwell.

Heavy, dragging steps, weighed down by hesitation.
