Left for Dead Came Back for Everything novel Chapter 180

Eleanor let out a cold scoff.

"You'll handle it? How exactly are you handling it? Is spending the entire night parked outside her building your idea of handling it?"

Zander's fingers gripped his phone case so tightly his knuckles turned white.

He had nothing to say.

Eleanor remained silent for a long moment before letting out another heavy sigh.

"Zander, do you think it doesn't break my heart to see you like this? But if you keep going down this path, you're only going to destroy yourself."

"Just come home for now. Tomorrow, put an end to all of this."

Eleanor hung up.

The busy tone blared relentlessly through the speaker.

Zander's hand shook violently holding the phone.

The tremors were entirely out of his control. He wasn't cold; his chest just felt so impossibly tight he couldn't breathe.

He closed his eyes and leaned his head back against the headrest.

The morning sun streamed through the windshield, hitting his face—the light was warm, but his complexion was completely ashen.

The day after tomorrow. No, tomorrow.

Tomorrow was the final day of the cooling-off period.

Once he signed that divorce certificate, he would have absolutely no legal ties to Eliza ever again.

He had rehearsed that exact day in his head countless times—he would run to city hall, block her path, fall to his knees, and beg her, "I won't sign it, I'll never sign it, you are the only one I love."

But he also knew the truth.

When Eliza said, "If you don't show up, I will march into the Roth estate and drag you there myself," she meant every single word.

She always kept her promises.

Unlike him.

Zander started the engine. The car slowly pulled out of the visitor lane.

In the rearview mirror, the curtains of the ninth-floor apartment were still drawn tight.

He took one final look before shifting his eyes back to the road ahead.

That bag of roasted chestnuts still sat on the stone pillar outside the lobby.

The paper bag was soaked through with morning dew, slumped into a pathetic, mushy pile.

...

At 6:40 AM.

Eliza was woken up by a sliver of sunlight peeking through the curtains.
