The door was unlocked.
The room smelled faintly of lavender sleep spray. Yvonne, wearing a pale yellow silk nightgown, was sitting at the vanity, curling her bangs.
Seeing Eleanor's reflection in the mirror, Yvonne immediately put down the curling iron, turned around with a smile, and took the soup bowl with both hands.
"Eleanor, you got up so early to make soup for me again. You work too hard."
She took a sip, her eyes crinkling, her voice as sweet as honey drizzled over cream. "It's so good. Your cooking just keeps getting better."
Eleanor beamed at the praise, reaching out to smooth a crease in the nightgown. "You're eating for two now, you need the nourishment. I've booked Dr. Miller for your ten o'clock prenatal checkup today. She's a top specialist, and it's impossible to get an appointment with her usually. Harrison had to pull some old strings to get you in."
"Mhm, I know. Thank Harrison for me," Yvonne nodded obediently.
"Where's Zander?" Eleanor glanced toward the hallway.
"Zander is in the living room," Yvonne said, a hint of grievance slipping into her tone. "He... doesn't seem to have slept much all night."
Eleanor sighed and patted Yvonne's hand. "He's just stubborn, don't take it to heart. Once the baby is born, he'll realize how good you are."
"I don't blame Zander." Yvonne lowered her eyelashes, her voice as soft as a sigh. "It's only natural... that he can't let go yet."
As she said "can't let go," a suffocating wave of jealousy washed over her.
Eleanor didn't notice this detail. She only saw a gentle, understanding future daughter-in-law, and held her hand affectionately. "You're just too sweet. Alright, get dressed. I'll go get Zander."
Eleanor turned and left the room.
The moment the room fell quiet, the smile vanished from Yvonne's face.
She left the soup bowl on the table and walked over to the full-length mirror.
The nightgown was thin, the silk clinging to her body, leaving the contours of her abdomen in plain sight.
Flat.
Completely flat.
There was no bump whatsoever.
Yvonne slowly placed her hand over her stomach, her fingertips trembling slightly.
The prenatal checkup...
Yvonne bit her lower lip.
It wasn't that she was unprepared.
In fact, her countermeasures were quite thorough. The night before last, she had already contacted an old friend—a young nurse in the obstetrics and gynecology department at Riverport Medical Center who owed her a favor.
She could get an ultrasound image.
She could forge a medical report.
The key was—she couldn't let Harrison take her pulse himself.
