Left for Dead Came Back for Everything novel Chapter 138

"Unless he has something to do with the project himself."

Eliza's fingers tightened their grip on the phone.

"Eliza—" Gwen's voice turned sickly sweet, oozing through the speaker.

"Someone has been pulling strings for you behind the scenes every single day, refusing to admit it to your face, and pinning the blame on me and my brother."

"What do you call that? Is that a crush? No—"

"That's him pulling strings in the dark, flirting from the shadows, and orchestrating everything behind the scenes."

"Think about it."

"Think about it really hard!"

Eliza's knuckles turned white around her phone.

She felt a sudden rush of heat start at the base of her neck and creep all the way up to her ears.

It happened so fast she couldn't suppress it.

"Gwen, stop talking nonsense—we're just alumni—"

"I'm not talking nonsense! When it comes to romance, I'm a professional!"

Gwen's voice was now pitching into a frenzied squeal.

"Did he give you flowers today, too?"

"..."

"Did he?"

"He just happened to—"

"Happened to?! Eliza Shaw! Snap out of it!"

"What man just 'happens to' have flowers and a cake perfectly prepped on the exact same day you sign a massive contract? He calculated that you'd reach out to him!"

"I didn't—I only contacted him to ask about Yvonne—"

"Exactly! You called him to talk business, and he bought you flowers! You bring up work, he brings you cake!"

"Do you still not get it? He's ready and waiting 24/7, just waiting for you to come to him!"

Gwen took a breath, and suddenly her voice dropped.

She sounded so gentle she might as well have been a different person.

"Eliza, are you blushing right now?"

Eliza didn't dare answer.

Her face wasn't just blushing.

It was burning.
