Back then, Eleanor's tone had been utterly convinced.
But was that conviction based on 'seeing the ultrasound with her own eyes', or was it based on a 'direct diagnosis from Dr. Roth'?
If it was only the former...
"Are you saying," Eliza started slowly, "that if Dr. Roth never actually examined her, the only proof of this entire pregnancy... is that single ultrasound printout?"
"It's highly probable." Julian nodded.
The cafe fell silent for a few seconds.
"We can't draw any absolute conclusions yet," Julian's voice pulled her back from her thoughts.
"But if we can get a hold of her medical records, or any prenatal logs from a legitimate hospital, we'll know the truth immediately."
He reached out and closed the roster, his long fingers pressing lightly against the cover.
"I'll have someone look into it. But it will take time. Hospital systems have strict privacy protocols; pulling records requires jumping through hoops."
Eliza looked at him. "Your people... can actually find that?"
Julian adjusted his glasses, a faint curve appearing at the corner of his mouth.
"If she's had a prenatal checkup at any hospital in this city, there's a record. If there's a record, it can be found."
"It's just a matter of time."
Eliza nodded.
"Thank you, Julian."
She reached out to take back the roster, but just as her fingers brushed the paper—
"There's something else."
Julian spoke up suddenly.
Eliza's hand stopped.
Julian looked into her eyes, his tone still perfectly level, but carrying the faintest trace of warmth.
"If she really is pregnant—that child has absolutely nothing to do with you."
"You don't need to extend your sympathy to anyone."
The sound of the rain outside seemed to grow louder.
Eliza's grip on the edge of the roster tightened, her knuckles turning pale white.
It had been so long since anyone had spoken to her like this.
Just simply telling her that other people's messes were not her burden to bear.
