Eliza fought hard to suppress the tremor in her voice.
"I had a lawyer look into it. The signature on that guarantee isn't mine. Once the handwriting analysis is done, this debt will have absolutely nothing to do with me."
"I told you, I am only responsible for Dad's medical bills."
"As for Miles's mess, figure it out yourselves. I can't fix it, and I am NEVER! Fixing! It! Again!"
"You! You're rebelling against me! Eliza, you heartless bitch! You can't even get money! You can't even keep a man! And now you refuse to take care of your own brother!"
"I must be cursed to have given birth to a little slu—"
Eliza hung up the phone.
Even after the call ended, her hands were still shaking with fury.
"Eliza, are you okay?"
A hot latte was gently placed at the corner of her desk.
Eliza looked up and saw her coworker, Mia, standing there with a look of cautious concern.
"I just went downstairs to grab one and got an extra," Mia said softly, rubbing her hands together.
"Take it easy, okay? Don't stress yourself out too much."
Eliza offered a weak smile.
"Thank you."
Mia blushed and hurried back to her desk.
Eliza picked up the latte, letting the warmth spread through her palms.
A wave of bitterness washed over her. A coworker she barely spoke to knew how to comfort her, yet her own mother treated her like garbage.
She hadn't done anything wrong.
...
Autumn in Riverport was harsh, and the sun had already set early.
Just as Eliza walked out of her office building, a sharp whistle cut through the air.
From the shadows, four figures stood up from the curb, flanked by two parked motorcycles.
It was the same two from last time—the guy in the black tank top and the one in the grey T-shirt. But this time, they had brought two more guys with them, both looking absolutely vicious. It was clear they weren't here to talk.
