Eliza took a sharp breath, forcing herself to remain completely calm.
"I did not sign that guarantee document."
She gritted her teeth, refusing to show even a sliver of fear.
"You need to collect from the person who actually borrowed the money. I suggest you go find Miles! Harassing me is useless! I don't have the money!"
"I have never acted as a guarantor for anyone, and I never authorized anyone to use my personal information."
The man in the black tank top let out a mocking laugh, threw his cigarette on the floor, crushed it beneath his boot, and tilted his head at her.
"Look, sweetheart. We hear this exact same excuse every day. Every deadbeat says they didn't sign it, or their ID was stolen. The problem is—"
He flipped the IOU over, tapping the photocopy taped to the back.
"This is your official ID. Front and back. The fingerprint is there. If you say you didn't sign it, fine. Take your brother to court for forgery. It's a family dispute, after all—"
The man in the grey shirt took another aggressive step forward, completely blocking Eliza's escape route.
"But this debt still has to be paid!"
"Three days."
"Four hundred and seventy thousand dollars. If you don't have it, you can kiss this fancy job goodbye! I highly doubt you want all your coworkers to know your brother is a degenerate deadbeat."
She scoffed coldly, staring directly into the man's eyes. "Don't try to intimidate me! Extortion and blackmail are felonies. There are cameras right there."
She tilted her chin up, gesturing toward the security camera tucked in the corner of the ceiling.
The man in black poked the inside of his cheek with his tongue and smirked.
"Alright, gorgeous. You've got some fire in you."
He shoved the IOU into his back pocket and purposely dropped his voice to a menacing whisper as he brushed past her.
"I'll be back in three days. And next time, we won't just be talking."
The two men swaggered down the hall and disappeared.
Eliza stood completely frozen until their heavy footsteps faded entirely, only then realizing her clothes were drenched in a cold sweat.
The hallway fell into a suffocating silence.
She leaned back against the heavy metal fire door and squeezed her eyes shut.
Her hands were trembling violently.
It wasn't out of fear.
