The moment Eliza opened her eyes, her stomach violently rebelled.
"Ugh..."
She pushed herself up from the cushions, realizing she was lying on the couch in Gwen's living room.
On the coffee table sat a steaming bowl of oatmeal and a blister pack of hangover pills.
Gwen was sitting on the edge of the sofa scrolling through her phone, dark circles heavily bruising the skin under her eyes.
It was obvious she had been up half the night taking care of her.
"You're up?"
"Take the pills first, then eat the oatmeal."
Eliza kept her eyes down, her fingers subconsciously massaging her left knee.
"Gwen... how did I get back last night?"
"Take a wild guess."
Gwen rolled her eyes and let out a dramatic scoff.
"You were so wasted you couldn't even stand. I weigh a hundred pounds soaking wet, and I had to haul your ass from the bar to the car. And then you threw up all over me! That was a limited-edition Chanel dress, and I only got to wear it once!"
Eliza lowered her head, her voice barely a whisper. "...I'm so sorry."
Gwen immediately dropped the joking attitude.
"Why are you apologizing to me?"
"Eliza, listen to me very carefully."
"You can cry. You can scream. You can call me and we can drink until the sun comes up."
"But if you ever dare to go to some dive bar and get black-out drunk by yourself again—I swear to God I will cut you out of my life."
Gwen's eyes welled with angry tears.
"Do you have any idea how terrified I was when I got that call? You were sitting alone in a dark corner with a busted leg, surrounded by drunk, sketchy men. If anything had happened to you..."
She cut herself off, snapping her head away to look at the wall.
Eliza choked back a sob.
"I won't do it again."
Just then, the screen of Eliza's phone lit up on the table.
The top notification on her lock screen was a message.
Julian: 'How much did you drink last night? I gave the medication to Gwen. Make sure you take it.'
Eliza stared at the notification for a long time.
She had absolutely no memory of contacting Julian last night.
How on earth did he know she was drinking? Was he psychic?
"What is it? Who texted?"
