I Was His Wife, Then His Widow, Then No One's But My Own novel Chapter 473

Nora swayed slightly as she stood. Xander immediately reached out to steady her, but she caught her balance and glanced back at him.

Every trace of warmth had vanished from her eyes, replaced by a formidable resolve. "Wait for me here. There are some things I need to say to him myself."

Xander didn't try to stop her. He knew this confrontation was inevitable; it was the twisted culmination of fate.

When Nora pushed open the doors to the ICU, the room was terrifyingly quiet.

Finnegan lay in the center, buried beneath a tangle of tubes and wires. The rhythmic, agonizingly slow beep of the heart monitor was the only sound.

Adelaide was sitting by his side. When she saw Nora enter, she froze before jumping to her feet, looking at her like a lifeline.

"Nora, you're finally here! Please, talk to him. The doctor said he might be able to hear you. If you talk to him, maybe he'll wake up."

Nora smoothly pulled her hand away from Adelaide's desperate grasp.

A flash of awkwardness crossed Adelaide's face as she slowly lowered her hands. Looking at Nora, she suddenly realized this was not the same woman she used to know.

Ever since she had married Xander, Nora seemed to have developed an impenetrable armor.

Nora looked at Adelaide with absolute calm. "Please step outside. I need to speak with him alone."

Adelaide hesitated, realizing that whatever Nora had to say might not be meant for her ears. She nodded silently and left the room, the heavy door clicking shut behind her.

The moment they were alone, the sterile hum of the machines felt louder.
