Seraphina glared venomously at the sobbing child in the backseat, any lingering trace of sympathy completely obliterated.
The way the girl cried looked exactly like Nora—her brows furrowed together, tears streaming endlessly.
It only reminded her of Nora, the woman who effortlessly possessed everything Seraphina had ever wanted!
It wasn't fair!
"Stop crying!"
Seraphina violently slammed her hand against the steering wheel, making the horn blare with a piercing screech. Cassie flinched violently, her wails instantly dying in her throat, replaced by broken, terrified hiccups.
Her tiny frame shrank into the car seat, her little hands gripping the seatbelt for dear life. Her eyes brimmed with absolute terror and tears, but she didn't dare make another sound, petrified that if she misbehaved, Seraphina would do something horrific to her.
Taking a deep breath, Seraphina dug into the console, pulled out a wet wipe, and tossed it to the back. Her voice remained hard and unyielding. "Wipe your face and shut up."
Cassie trembled from head to toe. She realized that the woman she knew was gone; she wasn't gentle anymore, just cold and terrifying.
Seraphina faced forward and resumed driving. She turned onto a dirt road that led to The Blackwood Hideout, a dilapidated structure that had clearly been abandoned for years.
She had scouted this location in advance. It was twenty-five miles away from the city center, surrounded by remote villages with terrible cell reception—the perfect place where screaming would do absolutely no good.
