Bonnie turned her head, noticing the sudden change in her expression, and tilted her round little face in curiosity. "Nora, why are you smiling so big at the news? Did something good happen? Can you change it to the cartoon channel for me now?"
Nora quickly snapped out of her trance, forcibly suppressing the triumphant laughter bubbling in her chest. She certainly wasn't about to drag a child into these ugly corporate vendettas.
"Of course. Let me find your cartoon channel."
Nora was smiling because Finnegan was now going to be so deeply buried in this catastrophic project crisis that he wouldn't have a single second of free time to harass her about dinner dates or forced engagements.
She could finally use this precious window of peace to safely navigate the academic seminar. Once the seminar was over, she could thoroughly and permanently sever all ties with the Fletcher family, ensuring she never had to deal with their repulsive hypocrisy ever again.
But these heavy, adult burdens weren't meant for a little girl's ears. She lovingly ruffled Bonnie's hair and offered a warm smile. "You sit right here and watch your cartoons, Bonnie. Let me know what you're craving, and I'll go cook for you."
Bonnie vigorously shook her head. "I love absolutely everything you make, Nora! But I don't want you to work too hard. You're supposed to be my guest and keep me company, not be stuck in the kitchen cooking for me!"
Nora's heart swelled with even more affection. Bonnie was always so incredibly thoughtful and mature for her age. She truly adored the little girl and was certain they were going to get along beautifully in the future. "It's perfectly fine. I actually really enjoy cooking for you, Bonnie."
Bonnie's face lit up with a massive grin. "Then I'll eat whatever you decide to make!"
Nora gave her head one last affectionate pat and turned to head toward the kitchen. Before she even took three steps, the phone in her pocket began violently vibrating. Pulling it out, her eyes locked onto the screen, which was flashing Cassie's name.
She stalled. Why on earth was Cassie calling her at a time like this? Had something terrible happened?
Realizing she still had one final day left on their one-month agreement, Nora answered the call, keeping her tone cool and measured. "What's wrong?"
