Xander stared at her intensely, his solemn demeanor devoid of any teasing. "From now on, you're going to experience a lot of firsts. Nora chuckled softly. Knowing they were merely bound by an alliance, she brushed it off as polite words of comfort and didn't pry any further. "I'll take your word for it then. Let's head back. I have a mountain of lab data waiting for me."

"If you don't have time, you can drop me off up ahead, and I'll catch a cab back."

"I have time," Xander replied smoothly.

Half an hour later, the car rolled to a smooth halt in front of the main building of the Vance Institute of Medical Science.

As soon as Nora pushed the door open and stepped out, she spotted Felix Ford standing a short distance away. He didn't approach, just stood there watching.

Felix's gaze locked onto Xander getting out of the driver's seat. Seeing the two of them share a knowing smile, he couldn't hide the brief flash of jealousy and sorrow in his eyes.

Felix clenched his fists, then strode briskly toward them. Addressing Xander, he said evenly, "Mr. Harrison, could I have a word? I'd like to speak with you privately."
