After forcing the apology out, Finnegan straightened up and looked at Nora. "Are you satisfied now, Nora?"
Nora stared down at him with an expression of pure ice, feeling no sense of victory whatsoever. Giving up, Finnegan and Seraphina turned on their heels and walked away.
Left alone, she cradled her mother's shattered portrait, her eyes brimming with unshed tears.
She felt entirely useless. Even when her mother's memory was blatantly disrespected, she didn't have the power to demand true justice.
Looking at the beautiful, smiling face trapped behind the jagged glass, a sharp ache pierced Nora's chest.
Xander stood silently by her side, a steadfast presence. Watching the tears pool in her eyes, an overwhelming urge to wipe them away struck him again, but he hesitated, unsure of what excuse to use this time.
He looked down, a quiet, self-deprecating smirk playing on his lips. He had dominated the ruthless corporate world for thirty-two years, yet this was the first time a woman had made him feel so utterly helpless.
"Stop crying. The disrespect shown to your mother won't go unpunished. One day, they'll pay for this in ways they can't even imagine."
Nora was genuinely surprised by his attempt to comfort her. The delivery was a bit stiff, but it actually managed to soothe the suffocating tightness in her chest.
She turned to look at him. Since they were entering this arrangement because he needed a mother for Bonnie, didn't that mean she had some leverage to ask for something in return?
Nora pressed her lips together, taking a deep, steadying breath. Summoning every ounce of her courage, she spoke up. "Mr. Harrison, I know the main reason you're agreeing to this marriage is to give Bonnie a mother who will truly care for her."
Hearing her business-like tone, Xander immediately shifted into a professional stance, raising a brow. "Go on."
Encouraged, Nora continued, "If I hold value for you in that regard, would it be possible for me to make one small request?"
As the words left her mouth, she watched him with a pounding heart. Xander Harrison was notoriously ruthless and cold-blooded. Anyone who had ever tried to approach him with an ulterior motive had either vanished without a trace or found themselves bankrupt overnight.
