Since she was unwilling to confide in him, it proved she hadn't fully accepted him yet. In her eyes, this was likely nothing more than a strategic alliance devoid of genuine emotion.
Which was perfectly fine—that was exactly how he viewed it too.
He just wanted to find a devoted mother for Bonnie.
Yes, that was all.
He turned his head, his irritation flaring again the moment he caught sight of Finnegan's dark expression. The man was an absolute eyesore.
Soon, the memorial concluded, and the guests began making their way to the main hall for the reception.
The dining area was just a short walk away, and the crowd trickled out of the solemn space.
Finnegan lingered in the empty hall, waiting for Benedict Newman. The older man hadn't made an appearance during the entire ceremony, and Finnegan refused to believe he wouldn't show up eventually.
Instead of Benedict, however, he saw Seraphina marching toward him. Finnegan blinked in surprise. "Seraphina? What are you doing here? Why aren't you at the reception?"
Seeing him loitering there, Seraphina instantly assumed he was waiting for Nora. Her face darkened, completely killing her appetite.
"Finnegan, tell me the truth. Did you come here to approach Benedict again? Are you planning to use Frederick's identity to marry her?"
Finnegan froze. How did she know about that? He had never breathed a word of the plan to her.
His reaction was all the confirmation Seraphina needed. Her eyes welled with tears of rage, and she raised her hand, swinging a hard slap toward his face.
"How could you do this to me, Finnegan! I've stayed by your side all these years, without a title or a ring, and this is how you repay me?"
Finnegan quickly caught her hand and covered her mouth. "Seraphina, keep your voice down! I never said I was going to use Frederick's identity to marry Nora. Why would you even think that?"
