I Was His Wife, Then His Widow, Then No One's But My Own novel Chapter 173

Nora didn't argue. She wanted to hear just how much further Sienna would go and what other garbage would fall out of her mouth.

Taking her silence as agreement, Sienna's smile widened. She pushed the fruit platter closer to Nora and adopted an earnest, persuasive tone.

"Look, you aren't getting any younger, and you have a daughter to raise. Even though Cassie is a sweet kid, the reality is you're a woman who's been married and had a child. But don't take this the wrong way! You're my best friend, and I would never set you up to fail."

She paused dramatically, leaning in closer. "My mom has a nephew. He's an executive at a massive tech firm, makes over a million dollars a year, and he's divorced, too. It's a perfect match. He's fairly handsome, all things considered. Why don't I set up a meeting?"

Nora stared blankly at the woman she had once treated as a confidant, suddenly realizing she had never truly known her at all.

Sienna hadn't bothered to ask for her opinion. She hadn't asked if Nora was ready, or if she even wanted this. She had simply slapped a label on her and made the decision herself.

Because she was a widow with a kid, she was only fit for a divorced man.

Sienna's claims of being her 'best friend' were nothing more than a convenient excuse to drag her down.

Nora let out a soft scoff. Was she supposed to thank Sienna for being so overwhelmingly considerate? Her 'friend' had even scouted out her next husband, sparing her the trouble.

Sienna mistook the chuckle for approval. Excitement coloring her voice, she whipped out her phone and unlocked the screen.

"You're in? Great, I'll send him your contact info right now. He'll add you in a second. Seriously, he is incredibly reliable. I practically grew up watching him. He's grounded, totally devoted to family, so you don't have to worry about a thing."

The ice in Nora's veins solidified. Sienna was basically admitting the man had performance issues, but was packaging it as 'inexperienced' to make him sound like some pure, innocent youth.

Pitching a man like that to her and calling it a match made in heaven—this was the bright future her 'best friend' had planned for her.

In that definitive moment, Nora mentally severed all ties with Sienna. She would never expect anything from this woman again.

Sienna was still eagerly laying out the itinerary. "You two should grab coffee sometime soon. It's ridiculous for you to stay tied to the Fletcher family like this. Finnegan has been dead for years, after all. You have to step out into the world eventually, right? How about tomorrow? Tomorrow afternoon works! He's free, and you can take a half-day off. Just grab some afternoon tea and get to know each other."

She was practically vibrating with impatience, desperate to lock down Nora's future on the spot without bothering to hide her urgency.
