I Was His Wife, Then His Widow, Then No One's But My Own novel Chapter 161

Early the next morning, however, Nora Newman was already dressed and ready for work. Zelda Vance blocked the entryway, refusing to let her pass. "Nora, you were just discharged from the hospital yesterday, and you're going to the institute today? Your wound hasn't completely healed yet. Can't you rest for another two days?"

Professor Xavier Vance sat in the living room, holding his coffee mug and reading the newspaper. Without looking up, he threw out a remark. "Don't stop her. Let her go. Doesn't she love working? Let her work to her heart's content."

Zelda turned her head and glared at him fiercely. Xavier's lips moved a little before he raised the newspaper to hide his face, going completely silent.

But no matter how much Zelda tried to persuade her, Nora refused to take another day off.

She bent down to put on her shoes, smiling at Mrs. Vance. She explained that a week's worth of lab data had piled up, waiting for her to process it. She truly couldn't lie in bed any longer.

Zelda watched the young woman's stubborn back disappear down the hallway. She sighed, closed the door, and turned to shoot Xavier another vicious glare.

Just as Nora arrived at the entrance of the Vance Institute, she saw Seraphina Shaw getting out of a car alone.

Finnegan Fletcher's wounds hadn't fully healed yet, so it was likely that only Seraphina was coming to work today.

Seraphina spotted Nora as well and froze for a moment. She clearly hadn't expected Nora to return to work so soon. With an incision that required so many stitches, anyone else would have rested for at least a couple of weeks.

Seraphina quickly adjusted her expression, forcing a smile as she hurried over. Her tone was impeccably gentle. "Nora, how is your injury? Why didn't you rest for a few more days? Why are you back at work so soon?"

Nora replied coolly, "I'm much better. Thank you for your concern."

Seraphina smiled warmly, reaching up to tuck a stray lock of hair behind her ear. Her voice carried a perfectly calculated tone of intimacy.

Seraphina stood rooted to the spot, her brow furrowing tightly as she watched Nora walk past her without so much as a change in expression.

It was too strange. The old Nora would have let her eyes dim with sorrow at the news that the Fletchers refused to visit her. But just now, Nora showed absolutely nothing. Her smile was natural, her tone flat.

Did she truly not care about the Fletcher family at all anymore?

As soon as Nora sat down at her desk and booted up her computer, her phone rang.

The name 'Cassie' flashed on the screen. She was a little surprised. After the incident last time, she hadn't thought Cassie would initiate a call again.

The child was always so proud; one rejection usually meant she would throw a tantrum for a long time. It seemed Nora had underestimated her own daughter.
