I Was His Wife, Then His Widow, Then No One's But My Own novel Chapter 159

Finnegan's mind snapped back to reality.

He turned to look at Seraphina. Her eyes were rimmed with red, tears pooling but stubbornly held back, and the fingers gripping his arm were trembling slightly.

Only then did the weight of his actions hit him. He had completely lost control, desperately demanding Nora's room number right in front of Seraphina.

How could he cause her so much pain?

He hurriedly reached out and wiped a stray tear from the corner of her eye. His voice softened, dripping with obvious guilt.

"I'm sorry, Seraphina. I lost my head just now. I just feel terribly guilty toward Nora. My brother is gone, and we didn't even know she was injured and hospitalized. It's just guilt, I promise. Please don't overthink it."

Seraphina sniffled. She knew this was not the time to throw a tantrum. Finnegan was still recovering; the thirty lash marks on his back hadn't fully healed. The most important thing was getting him back to the room to apply his medication and rest, not starting a fight over another woman that would only push him further away.

She choked back all her grievances and forced a deeply considerate smile. "I'm fine, Finn. I'm not mad at you. I just worry about you. You're hurt, and standing too long will make your back flare up again. How about this? Once you're feeling better, I'll go see her with you. That way, we'll have a valid excuse to visit Nora together, right?"

Finnegan gave her a tender smile. He wrapped an arm around her shoulder, gave it a reassuring pat, and agreed. The two of them slowly made their way back toward the treatment rooms.

Nora had just stepped out of her hospital room to use the restroom. As she turned the corner of the corridor, she witnessed the entire exchange.

Seraphina was clinging to Finnegan's arm, the two of them pressed intimately close as they walked. Finnegan looked down at Seraphina and smiled, a deep, genuine affection practically overflowing from his eyes.

He and Zelda escorted Nora out of the hospital, the car cutting across half the city to finally bring her home.

The moment she pushed open the front door, Professor Vance hurried out of the living room to greet her.

He had been sitting on the sofa pretending to read the newspaper, but the second he heard the lock click, he tossed the paper aside and stood up. His sharp eyes scanned Nora from head to toe, finally locking onto her left arm. His brows slammed together.

He opened his mouth, then closed it. His chest heaved twice before he finally bit out a harsh reprimand. "Look at the state of you. Absolutely disgraceful."

Zelda shot her husband an exasperated look as she set Nora's duffel bag on the entryway console. "She's already hurt this badly. We all know you're worried sick, so couldn't you just say something nice for once? You're so stubborn, hiding how much your heart is breaking."
