I Loved You in the Dark Until Someone Loved Me in the Light novel Chapter 40

"You are always so busy with work. When you first got married, you accompanied York to his business dinners, drinking until you were dizzy, and now you have ruined your stomach," Evelyn said. "You're still young. You need to eat properly and take care of your body."

Gillian's hand paused halfway to her plate.

During their first year of marriage, things between her and York hadn't been this hostile. Back then, even though he had been forced into the marriage, he still showed traces of patience... He would order stomach medication for her and tell her to stop following him to corporate drinking events.

But back then, she refused to listen. She had been desperate to win his heart, willing to destroy her own health just to support him.

Now, she finally understood that his heart had never belonged to her.

Her entire effort had been a pathetic, desperate joke.

"I tore up the divorce agreement."

Gillian froze, looking at her mother-in-law with a frown. "Evelyn..."

"He is flaunting his mistress, and all you asked for was a single house? By all rights, half of his entire empire belongs to you. I am having my lawyers draft a new agreement."

Evelyn looked at Gillian, her expression heavy. After a long silence, she sighed, her eyes full of genuine pity. "Gillian, the Foster family has failed you. Your father saved our family, and this is how my son repays you..."

Gillian's eyelashes fluttered. It was entirely because of that life-saving debt that York had been forced to marry her in the first place.

If she could go back and choose again, she would never have said yes.

"I heard his mistress works at your hospital?" Evelyn asked suddenly.

Gillian pressed her lips together and stayed silent.

Silence was a confirmation.

Evelyn scoffed coldly. "Things between you and York aren't completely unsalvageable. Weren't things perfectly fine before?"

"I will handle her for you. If, after she's gone, you still feel you can't live with him, then we will talk about divorce. Alright?"

Gillian parted her lips, wanting to say it wasn't necessary.

She had to get this divorce.
