Miles returned from his meeting, heard about the attack, and immediately rushed over to check on Gillian.
Deeply concerned, he pulled her into his office, carefully studying her pale face. "A lot has happened lately. Do you want me to give you a couple of days off to rest?"
Gillian forced a smile. "No need. I'm not that fragile."
"You've been looking exhausted lately," Miles noted gently.
He sighed. "The investigation into the attacker is finished. She's a psychiatric patient connected to your father's research project. Because of a massive error on Hailey's part, the woman lost her baby. Her condition had been perfectly managed, but the trauma triggered a severe psychotic break overnight."
"That's what led to her storming the hospital with a knife today."
Gillian frowned deeply. "Why hasn't anyone heard about this?"
An error of that magnitude was textbook medical malpractice. Someone had buried it perfectly, ensuring not a single whisper leaked out.
No wonder Hailey had been wandering around like a ghost at work recently.
"They blamed the nursing staff for failing to monitor the patient properly. The nurse on duty was already fired," Miles explained. "We don't know the exact details of how they spun it."
"But her boyfriend is highly capable. He's the hospital's largest investor and majority shareholder."
Gillian tightened her grip on her knees. Yes, she knew. This hospital had once belonged to her father. He had built it from the ground up, only for a single research scandal to destroy his reputation. York had swooped in, monopolized the board, and maintained an iron grip on the majority shares ever since.
If Hailey was the one responsible, York easily had the power to make the entire incident vanish.
"Then my father's research..." Gillian looked at Miles, her voice hardening. "Should absolutely not be in Hailey's hands."
"I don't have the final say on that project," Miles said, his face filled with apology. "But don't worry. After an incident like this, her involvement won't last long. Hailey simply doesn't have the competence to push that research forward."
He sounded confident.
But an unshakable sense of dread lingered in the pit of Gillian's stomach.
Miles asked her out for dinner that evening, but she declined.
