Zoe Lynd answered with silence.
"The Winters family has dropped the case," Hayden Thorne said. "They claimed it was a misunderstanding."
Anger gradually surfaced in Zoe's cold eyes. After a long moment, she let out a bitter laugh.
"Is that so, Mr. Thorne? I suppose I should be thanking you, then."
She stood up just as an officer approached. "Ms. Lynd, you're free to go."
Zoe gave Hayden a long, hard look. No matter how deep his past with Sienna Winters ran, he was still her husband right now. The fact that he chose to stand by Sienna without a second thought was something she would never forgive.
Hayden ignored the utter fury and disappointment in her eyes. Treating her like a stranger he couldn't care less about, he spoke in a slow, icy tone. "I warned you. I can turn a blind eye to your usual tantrums, but if you touch Sienna or Holden..."
He paused, letting the unquestionable authority of his words sink in. "That's crossing the line."
A sharp slap echoed through the room as Zoe's hand struck his cheek.
The side of Hayden's face instantly flushed red; she had hit him with everything she had.
Zoe smiled at him. "I can't touch them, but what about you?"
Did Hayden really think that just because they had slept together and shared a child, she owed him any semblance of affection?
Watching him protect Sienna's family, she took a moment to examine her own heart. It didn't ache. The only thing that hurt was her hand from slapping his face.
The officers heard the commotion and rushed over, stunned into silence at the sight of the couple turning violent.
Sienna's condescending tone only earned a cold scoff from Zoe. "You're mistaken. Just because you aren't pressing charges doesn't mean I won't sue Terrence Winters."
If she couldn't win playing defense, she would go on the offensive.
Sienna's expression turned incredibly ugly. "Zoe, Mom and I gave you a chance. We let you off the hook, and this is how you repay us?"
Zoe's beautiful eyes were entirely devoid of emotion, and she didn't even glance at Hayden. The look she shot Sienna held an uncompromising threat. "Go back and tell Terrence to find a damn good lawyer. Gather your evidence, and prep your—"
Zoe let her gaze intentionally lock onto Hayden's face. Her red lips parted in a mocking half-smile. "Witnesses. Mr. Thorne said it himself in front of the police. He was there when I was assaulted, and he can testify. I'm sure Mr. Thorne hasn't forgotten."
Sienna blurted out with absolute certainty. "Zoe, Hayden won't testify. Isn't that right, Hayden?"
