The professor tugged on Zoe's sleeve.
Lowering his voice, he whispered.
"What do you say about our arrangement?"
She didn't register what he meant at first.
"What arrangement?"
"About you becoming my student."
She felt she barely knew the man.
If they had ever actually crossed paths, it had to have been before she lost her memory.
"There's no need."
His face immediately fell.
"You're turning me down?"
She kept her voice equally low.
"Old man, I literally don't know you."
His expression shifted dramatically.
"You can't say that! That's burning the bridge after crossing the river! Hayden is your husband, isn't he?"
Her lips twitched.
"No, he isn't."
The professor sat bolt upright.
"Mr. Thorne, I just heard Zoe say—"
"I accept your offer to be your final student. This meal is on me, consider it a celebratory dinner for taking me under your wing."
A massive grin broke out across the old man's face.
She was practically tearing her hair out on the inside.
This cunning old fox.
Always trying to show off.
Hayden cast a sideways glance at the two of them.
They had just been whispering furiously to each other.
He had a strong suspicion they were talking badly about him.
Garrett looked stunned.
The professor had publicly declared years ago that he wouldn't take any more students.
This was huge—
He immediately stood up. "Congratulations to you both, Professor Layne and Zoe."
The old man just sat there chuckling, raising his glass.
As the junior party, she naturally had to stand up to accept the toast as well.
Garrett left his seat and walked over to stand near them.
Garrett had been in high spirits earlier, but by the time dinner was over, he felt utterly depressed.
"That Hayden Thorne... everyone says he's madly in love with his brother's widow and doesn't even look at other women. They call him fiercely devoted, but it doesn't look that way today."
He sounded intensely jealous.
Zoe was a widow, yet even a massive corporate titan like Hayden was drooling over her.
But given his scandalous reputation, Garrett seriously doubted the man had genuine intentions.
The professor adjusted his glasses and looked at him.
He shook his head.
A tech guy through and through. Nearly thirty and barely had any dating experience.
He was handsome, tall, and highly capable.
It was just a shame that—
He patted Garrett on the shoulder and let out a chuckle.
"You like Zoe, don't you?"
Garrett flushed red but didn't deny it.
"Ms. Lynd is brilliant and beautiful. I was actually hoping to ask for your help in the future, Professor—"
The old man threw his head back and laughed brightly.
"You! Stop burying your head in your work all day and find some time to date! Couldn't you tell? Those two are a married couple!"
