I Forgot I Ever Loved You (Zoe and Hayden) novel Chapter 108

After sitting in the SUV for a long while, trying to regain his composure, Hayden finally picked up his phone and dialed the manor's landline.

Mrs. Gable practically ran to answer it.

"What is she doing right now?"

He had zero interest in coming home to another bloody, life-or-death scenario with Zoe.

Aside from rushing her to the hospital, he would also have to spend a fortune silencing the press.

He had cleaned up these messes countless times over the past five years.

He was deeply exhausted by it all.

Didn't Zoe want a divorce?

He would have happily granted it to her years ago.

If it weren't for Holden's conditionβ€”

Mrs. Gable cupped her hand over the receiver, as if terrified Zoe might overhear.

"Ma'am isβ€”"

Hayden cut her off impatiently before she could finish.

"Never mind. I'm sending a crew over immediately."

Upstairs, Zoe had delivery drivers bringing bag after bag of food directly to her bedroom door.

She ate until she was uncomfortably stuffed and on the verge of throwing up, then finally dragged her trash bags out into the hallway.

The house was suddenly swarming with strangers.

Mrs. Gable happened to be walking by.

Zoe's face was still looking horribly pale.

"Mrs. Gable, what is going on here?"

Bulky men dressed in work gear were tearing through the mansion, modifying the interior.

They were laying heavy, thick carpets everywhere, even adding three layers of padding over the marble floors in the downstairs living room.

Outside in the garden, a dozen landscapers were frantically rolling out thick turf, practically burying all the decorative river stones.

Even the handrails on the staircases were being wrapped in thick foam padding.

Mrs. Gable ignored her question, bending down to grab the massive trash bags Zoe had left out.

Zoe called out to stop her.

"Bring me up a fruit knife."

Mrs. Gable's face went completely white. She answered with a rigid expression.

"No."

Zoe frowned. "Just a fruit knife. You don't have one?"

Mrs. Gable was absolute. "No. If you want fruit, Ma'am, I will cut it in the kitchen and bring it up to you."

Zoe didn't want to bother her.

"It's fine, I can just cut it myself."

"Absolutely not!"

Mrs. Gable's voice went shrill. She stared at Zoe in sheer panic.

"If you need anything, Ma'am, just call me. There are no knives. And even if there were, I wouldn't give you one."

Less than two seconds later, her vision went completely black.

Her body went limp, and she collapsed entirely.

Hayden had ordered Colin to drive him to the corporate headquarters.

But halfway there, an overwhelming sense of dread settled in his chest.

"Turn around. Back to Blackwood Manor."

Colin was stunned.

He was sure he had misheard, as they were only minutes away from the office, but he obediently whipped the car around.

When Hayden shoved open the bedroom door, an unmistakable scent immediately hit his senses.

Zoe was sprawled unconscious on the floor. His heart slammed against his ribs as he rushed over and scooped her into his arms.

Sure enough, there was a dark red stain on the carpet.

Moving on autopilot, Hayden immediately dialed Quentin's number.

"Get over here right now. Zoe tried to kill herself."

Quentin's voice was calm. "Bandage the wound to slow the bleeding. I'm on my way."

Quentin was far too used to this.

If he didn't get at least two of these frantic calls from Hayden a month, he'd think something was actually wrong.

Hayden stared down at Zoe's face. She was completely pale, her lips completely devoid of color.

If she was faking it this time, she was doing a much better job than she ever had before.
