Frowning, he swiped to answer.

A maid's hushed, panicked voice came through the speaker.

"Sir, Toby won't stop crying. He refuses to sleep and says he wants his dad. Nothing we do is working. Could you please come over?"

Archer's grip on the phone tightened, his eyes darting to Virginia.

She had already fixed her slipped shoulder strap and bent down to retrieve her laptop, the flush of passion completely gone from her face, replaced by cool clarity.

"Go," she said, scrolling on her mouse without even looking up. "Toby is going through a lot. He needs you."

Archer swallowed hard, ruthlessly crushing the raging desire in his veins, and hung up the phone. "I'll be back soon," he rasped.

He walked over, leaned down to kiss her forehead, and strode out of the bedroom.

Pushing open the door to the nursery, Archer immediately spotted Toby in his little bear pajamas.

The boy was curled up at the head of the bed, hugging his knees, his face pale and eyes rimmed red.

Seeing him, Toby threw off the covers and scrambled over, wrapping his arms tightly around Archer's leg.
