After an indeterminate amount of time, the bug picked up the sound of a chair scraping, the door opening, and shutting.
Then, Chloe's muttering echoed through the earpiece...
"As long as I keep playing sick, as long as I never get better, Archer will owe me! He'll never be able to shake me off for the rest of his life!"
Inside the taxi.
Virginia tapped the save button, a mocking sneer flashing in her cold eyes.
Just as she suspected.
Removing her earbud, she dropped her phone into her purse. "Driver, we can head out now."
Now that she had the evidence, it was time to put an end to this circus.
The taxi pulled out of the hospital and merged into the endless flow of traffic.
...
The CEO's office at Vanderbilt Group.
Archer sat behind his expansive desk, an open quarterly financial report before him.
He held his fountain pen, hovering over the signature line. Minutes ticked by, but he couldn't bring himself to sign a single letter.
His mind looped endlessly around the image of Virginia brushing past him that morning, so aloof and uncompromising.
*Bzzzt...*
His phone, face down on the desk, abruptly vibrated.
Archer frowned and flipped it over. Two words flashed on the screen: Virginia.
His grip on the pen faltered. He slammed it down and smashed the answer button without a second thought.
"Virginia!"
"Are you free this afternoon? Let's meet. I have something to give you." The woman's frosty voice filtered through the receiver, entirely stripped of emotion or pleasantries.
Yet the rigid line of Archer's jaw noticeably softened.
His Adam's apple bobbed. "I'm free," he said hoarsely. "I'll come pick you up."
